Netflix doing the biz

Dereck
Short films have long been close to my heart, I’ve made a medium sized handful over the years, and during London Film Festival RecDek House screened 20 new short stories at the BFI. These tales caught our attention from filmmakers all over the world. We’re absolutely delighted to say that three of those have made their way to Academy voting contention. This email will be peppered with those posters for your consideration - Olive (Lesley Ann Warren), Clout (Archie Yates) and Where The Light Enters You (a documentary shot over 7 years). Congratulations to all filmmaking teams at having made it this far. An incredible feat.
The main headlines swirling around the industry has been who on earth is going to buy Warners, well its looking like Netflix have just moved into the front runner position. Certainly if the users of X/Twitter are to be believed. And why wouldn’t you believe the users of X/Twitter?
But is anyone else solely Netflix hopping at the moment? The first 4 episodes of Stranger Things S5 positively gobbled up (maybe even faster than Bob Newby was gobbled up by a Demogorgon in season 2. Is that a spoiler? Probs. So sorry if you haven’t watched season 2 but also come onnnnnnnnnnn). I can’t remember a TV show that had quite the cultural buzz AND then delivers the punch, especially one which crosses genre so easily appealing to lovers of teen adventure/horror/fantasy/retro 80s vibes and who doesn’t love at least ONE of these! #aimight

Also and loving Matthew Rhys’s performance in the The Beast In Me on Netflix, so much so that its our official pick of the week…
When grief meets suspected murder
Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys deliver career-best performances in this taut psychological thriller. Danes plays Aggie Wiggs (questionable name, brilliant character), a writer stuck on her Ruth Bader Ginsburg book while grieving her eight-year-old son was killed by a drunk driver four years ago. The driver, Teddy, avoided charges and still lives locally, a constant reminder. Into Aggie's affluent neighbourhood moves Nile Jarvis (Rhys), a multimillionaire real estate heir and prime suspect in his wife's disappearance six years back. He's deeply unlovely, exactly the kind of person who'd ask neighbours if he can cut a jogging trail through communal woods - and everyone agrees except Aggie. "I should hang out with more dykes," he says admiringly.
To investigate her neighbour, Aggie agrees to write Nile's story with him - beginning an antagonistic, magnetic relationship that fuels the entire series.
What follows is eight episodes of cat-and-mouse brilliance. Jonathan Banks (of Breaking Bad fame) turns up as Nile's terrifying father. There's an intriguing subplot with Nile's new wife Nina (Brittany Snow). Political machinations around a property development. A married FBI agent with compromising secrets. But at its core, it's a two-hander exploring what happens when two damaged people truly see each other - and how much darkness you'll accept in return for being understood. First major work from creator Gabe Rotter. Fab debut.
