Our pick of the week…

This week's pick is Australia’s hidden crime gem.

Scott Ryan stars as Ray Shoesmith, a hitman juggling contract killing with single fatherhood and caring for his sick brother. What starts as typical Aussie crime comedy - hapless crooks, strip club meetings, ocker gang bosses - evolves into something profound about grief, morality, and irreversible choices.

The show's origin story is remarkable: Ryan made an $3,000 mockumentary called The Magician as a film student, then drove taxis for years when no one would fund a TV version. Finally, FX America called 13 years later, and Ryan got to expand his character across three seasons.

Ray operates by his own moral code - killing people is fine, but huntsman spiders cross the line because "you gotta draw the line somewhere." Ryan, who'd never acted professionally before, delivers a flawless performance that makes you root for a murderer.

By season three, you'll be crying as much as laughing. The show fearlessly abandons its comedic premise for darker territory, exploring how small decisions create unalterable paths. A masterclass in Australian storytelling that deserves far wider recognition.

See ya sooooon.
