Going Supersonic
Off to see Oasis?

The theme of today’s email is in no way affected by Oasis’s reunion tour reaching London, let’s just get that straight.
But just in case you did want to feel just a little bit of the hype, how about a reminder of the time when Definitely Maybe hit the charts - an astounding debut album which shot two brothers from Manchester (with one helluvan attitude) firmly to super stardom. I don’t quite remember it, because I was like 7. But luckily for everyone there’s a short documentary about their debut album and its on YouTube for free. Check it out:
Seen as we are on the subject of Oasis you could also pair this with Supersonic the delightful dive into Oasis’s history leading up to their epic Knebworth gigs which uses footage and voiceovers from the time. Its a more rounded doc which throws you into their legacy… Hell, we’ll even make it our pick of the week
OUR PICK OF THE WEEK
Oasis: Supersonic
Mat Whitecross's documentary follows the Gallagher brothers' meteoric rise from Manchester council estates to Knebworth glory. Using unseen interviews over archive footage, it charts how a bunch of working-class lads conquered the world through sheer audacity and some serious tunes.
The central drama throws up the well documented sibling rivalry - Noel the perfectionist songwriter versus Liam the sneering frontman. Liam's disdainful cool complementing Noel's stadium-filling anthems. (Very much enjoyed Liam's instruction to his brother: "You do the music, and I'll just be over here looking cool as f**k.")
While the film glosses over their later decline (ending conveniently at 1996's Knebworth triumph), it perfectly captures that brief moment when British guitar bands were back conquering the planet.
Refreshingly free of artistic pretension, this is about lads who simply wanted to be the biggest band on earth - and for a time, the world was theirs.
