In startup land one is constantly following one’s nose. Turning and twisting on instinct and experience, often let down by people who promise things they can’t deliver. Lifted up by those who help no questions asked. Perhaps the same can be said for the wider entertainment industry? Making movies is no-mean-feat!
With our event in Venice around the corner (RSVP via your RecDek app!) I’m’a take a moment this week to tell you of our evolution here at RecDek.
The short of it: we’ll soon be adding a new string to our bow, a place for the indie industry to play between the film festivals where we host. If you’d like to be first in line for our new industry focused platform - we’ve opened a waitlist.

Well I sat down with Sam yesterday to understand how he got his debut feature off the ground and into cinemas and VOD, via hosting his own pool party screenings. OK back to our evolution: where RecDek is at…
The RecDek app is a social watchlist platform focused on independent entertainment discovery. Here to make sure you are watching indie entertainment suited to your taste and staying up to date with your social circles favourites. Don’t waste 10 days a year each scrolling streamer algorithms (!), watch intentionally, consume awesome stuff meant for you. That’s your RecDek watchlist.
RecDek House is our events arm, we host at all the major film festivals around the world, it’s where we do what we can to support the indie industry in all its forms. It’s how we launched and its how we continue to spread the word. This is really who we are made up of and its how our community has grown.
But, for me there has been something missing. A beat which ties together our community with the help we can provide. We hang out, we watch films, we collaborate, but RecDek House has been distinctly kept as an in-person happening, chatham house rule on panels, short film screenings from the best on the circuit and a House Party to find new people for your filmmaking tribe.
We’re introducing new place for the Storytellers.
Storytelling is as old as time. And it’s in our nature to listen to the storytellers, to the beats of the words from the mouth of the man, or woman. We listen for the drama. For news of faraway lands. For stories of war or weddings, dragons or delays. We heed their warning. We drink in the delightful days dedicated to tales that capture our imagination and ignite our senses.
The power of well told yarn should not be underestimated. It speaks to culture. These are shared experiences: the storyteller, their characters, their audience. The audience and you. You and your friends.
The power of long form.
A well told story on the big screen, or at home on the sofa, opens our eyes, twists our spirits, or leaves us collectively refreshed, makes us chuckle when we needed it. Gives us a break from reality. Causes debate. Provokes action. Laughs at inaction. You get it.
Yet, we live in overdrive. Jumping from one project to another, hoping to land a capitalistic hit. Striving endlessly for a way to live faster. To make money quicker. Speedy, efficiency, seemingly spurring us on to a somehow wealthier life. Social videos discarded at second four. The most shocking tactics retain our attention, and even then we are onto the next video. The next clip which reflects more of ourselves, to us. And the next. And next.
The forever scroll, easily befriending us, but forever our enemy. Striving and swiping into the future, attention dwindling, we have forgotten the point of it all. That existence is right in front of us, right now, to be indulged in and understood. To be picked apart on the big screen. The future is now. It is always now. Not in some unspecific time, certainly not on our phones.
Life is nonetheless busy, right. The result? The time we have for the storytellers and their tale dwindles. Never given the light of day, their lessons boxed into exhausting bedtime routines. Deadlines and drinking. Night now preferred, now needed for sleeping. And fair enough. Who are we to decide how culture moves.
At RecDek want to reinvigorate the importance of the humble storyteller. Our new platform will be a place the industry can find ways to empower themselves. So their stories can drive a wedge into the time that people have.

For over 30 years, they have collaborated with established artists and up-and-coming newcomers, combining creative vision with international market understanding. They produce, mix and master music to release level and place artists on renowned labels such as Armada Music, Kontor Records, Universal Production Music, Ministry of Sound, Selected, Blanc and Mia Mendi.
OUR PICK OF THE WEEK
Call this a vampire film and you've missed it. Jim Jarmusch's 2013 picture has vampires, sure, it is nominally about them, but what it's really chasing is love, beauty, and the way both refuse to die.
Tom Hiddleston is Adam, a reclusive, antiquated musician holed up in a crumbling Detroit mansion buried under stacks of old vinyl and instruments he adores with an intensity that feels faintly unhinged which, in Jarmusch's hands, is exactly the point. His counterpart and centuries-long love is Eve, played perfectly by Tilda Swinton. She drifts through Tangier, taking her blood via an old friend who happens to be Christopher Marlowe (the wonderful John Hurt). Theirs is a marriage that survives oceans and long silences, presence optional, devotion permanent.
It's Jarmusch welding style to feeling, and we love that. If his sensibility leaves you cold, this won't convert you, this is a beautiful, funny, quietly aching thing.
The supporting bench is a joy: Anton Yelchin as Adam's devoted gofer, Jeffrey Wright as a bent doctor, Mia Wasikowska as Eve's chaos-agent little sister. And Luca Guadagnino shoots it, which tells you everything about how it looks, frames steeped in warmth and hush.
Underneath the cool exterior sits something oddly sincere: that love and the hunt for beauty are what keep you going. And going. And going.
