Shame Calculator

You srsly still scrolling Netflix?

In partnership with

OK so out of nowhere we’ve built you a low key shame calculator. Brené Brown might be proud. Check it out:

Why have we built you a shame calculator? Well data behemoths Nielsen recently reported that audiences spend an enormous whopping 23 minutes on average each every time they sit down just looking for something to watch. Sound like you?

Give it a go, share your shame, you’ll thank us later. Tell your friends. They can get in on it too #bitoffuninit shame.recdek.com - think of RecDek as a shame saviour if you will?

Also, I reckon BBC’s recent Panorama was more scary than any Halloween film, granted it was the same program makers that were found to be cutting together Trump’s “fight like hell” speech for journalistic effect which did not go down well with anyone. But the reporting here was clear: the tech bros of Silicon Valley (I’ll probably be one one day, but more like a tech bro filmmaker from the Brixton South London, know what I mean?) have managed to wang their way to the top of the political system and the outlook doesn’t look that rosy for any of us. Definitely worth a watch.

And out pick of the week is the film that won SXSW last year! It’s finally reached streamers and Channel 4 in the UK check it out.

It is ACE…

OUR PICK OF THE WEEK

Sometimes the kindest thing a stranger can do is just like your Facebook posts when no one else bothers.

Barbie Ferreira plays Lily, a young woman so used to emotional abuse from her narcissist father that when her boyfriend cheats, she replies "no prob! :)" instead of telling him to do one. After a brutal fight with dad, she tries finding him on Facebook and accidentally connects with a middle-aged contractor (John Leguizamo) who shares his name.

What unfolds is the least cynical thing you'll watch all year. The stuff cinema is for. Bob becomes the father figure Lily never had, she becomes the daughter he lost. Small gestures - liking posts, fixing toilets, talking about childhood trauma over campfires become the therapy they need. It sounds modest because it is, but Ferreira and Leguizamo make these tiny moments devastating.

Writer-director Tracie Laymon based this on her own life, and you can feel it. Sure, their connection might be slightly too neat, and Bob's basically a saint. But by the time Lily's cuddling a puppy to work through childhood trauma, you'll be sobbing regardless. The film understands that healing isn't dramatic - it's someone showing up consistently with genuine love.
